When screen printing or working with direct-to-film (DTF) processes, accurate color matching is crucial for producing high-quality results. In this guide, Tim from DTF New England will walk us through matching colors to ensure that your prints come out exactly as you intend.
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
Before you start, ensure you have the following (if you can!):
- A physical swatch sheet provided by DTF New England in your past order! If you dont have one, you can email us at: info@dtfnewengland.com
- A black cotton shirt (recommended for accurate color matching)
- A heat press
- Your design software (such as Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW)
Step 2: Press the Swatch Sheet
Take the physical swatch sheet you received from DTF New England and press it onto the black cotton shirt. This step is recommended because pressing the swatch sheet onto the material you'll use for your final product gives you a more accurate color representation, avoiding interference from polyester dyes or other variables.
Step 3: Download the Color Match File
Next, visit the DTF New England website and download the color-match PDF. This file contains the various color swatches available for your DTF printing needs.
Step 4: Import the Color Match PDF into Your Design Software
Open your design software and import the color-match PDF. This step allows you to visually compare the digital colors in your design software with the physical swatch sheet you've pressed.
Step 5: Match Your Artwork to a PMS Color
Now, select the specific color in your design that you need to match. Use the eyedropper tool in your design software to sample the color from the physical swatch. For example, if your design requires a navy blue that matches PMS 309, locate PMS 309 on the swatch sheet and use the eyedropper tool to pick up that color.
Step 6: Compare and Adjust
After selecting the color, you might notice a slight difference between what you see on your screen and the swatch. Remember, every computer screen displays colors differently, so it's essential to rely on the physical swatch sheet for the most accurate representation.
Step 7: Finalize Your Design
Once you're satisfied with the color match, finalize your design and proceed with the printing process. If you don't have a physical swatch sheet, you can email info@dtfnewengland.com or include a request with your next order.
Color matching is a critical step in screen printing and DTF processes.
By following these steps, you can achieve consistent, accurate results that meet your customers' expectations.
